Everyday new applications, programs, and ideas are being created to enhance technology in classrooms. Although their are many mixed emotions, especially when it comes to millennials, about online test taking and online courses, this is just the start to the growth of the technology era. Technology in the classroom could be a good or bad thing depending on what programs are used and how they used.
Contrary to popular belief, teachers actually have a life out of school! Whether it involves family, sports, or hobbies, they usually like to share them through social media. Social media has a
tendency to “suck people in”, meaning that it becomes a huge part of their
lives. A high school teacher, Carly McKinney, started to show more interest and
involvement in her Twitter account rather than her students. Carly McKinney tweeted inappropriate things which eventually lead her to lose her job. “One post read:
'Naked. Wet. Stoned,' while another said: 'Watching a drug bust go down in the
parking lot. It's funny cuz I have weed in my car in the staff parking lot'”
(Farberrov 2013). Like Carly McKinney, many teachers and professionals fall in this trap which only emphasizes the dangers of social media even more.
Although social media and technology in the professional field can be dangerous, if used in a mature way, it could also be the reason for success. One of the newest ways to connect education and technology is through augmented reality. Augmented reality does many different things, it can stimulate real life situations and make something that is still come to life. As stated in the dictionary, augmented reality is an enhanced image or environment as viewed on a screen or otherdisplay, produced by overlaying computer-generated images, sounds,or other data on a real-world environment. This technology is allowing schools ranging from Pre-K to the marine academies to learn things in the most realistic and efficient ways. The article, "Augmented Reality Triani
ng Systems Destined for Marine Schoolhouses" portrays the importance of this system for marine training. "Called Augmented Immersive Team Training, the system is designed to get Marines out of physically limited trainers and simulator facilities by projecting realistic training scenarios into their field of vision, wherever they are." AITT allows the marines to be in real life situations; their googles portray an realistic battle field where they have to jump over bombs, dodge tanks, and hide from helicopters. This allows them to be more prepared then they ever would have been in the past. The growth of technology and augmented reality allows classrooms and students to be more prepared.
Another app that allows students to learn through augmented reality is ZooKazam. The article "Bring a Hippo into the Classroom with ZooKazam" shows how augmented reality can also help young kids learn. ZooKazam works with targets, when these targets are viewed via the app, a realistic "live" animal will appear. "Children could create images of different habitats, and then use the target to bring the correct animal into the scene. They could create images of different animals and then label them to show their main features – use them for classification." ZooKazam allows young students to learn through practical and arising technology.
If you are a Snapchat user, you may not even notice that you are using augmented reality almost everyday. You know those little filters that makes a hotdog dance or your twin bitemoji grill and do homework, those are all parts of augmented reality. "Snapchat Turns its Dancing Hotdog into New Ads" shows how Snapchat is trying to advance their features for an increase in income and popularity. "The Dancing Hot Dog was viewed more than 2 billion times on Snapchat — a testament to how much our community loves amazing augmented reality experiences inside the camera. Now, you can create yours," reads a blog post on the update. " Companies are becoming aware that augmented reality is the next big thing, so don't be surprise if you see more and more using it to expand their company.
Chapter 7 of "Lol...OMG", focuses on the dangers of social media. It emphasis how a digital reputation is so important and can either help you or hurt you. Like Carly McKinney, her digital reputation resulted in her losing her job. The chapter points out serval tips to keep a safe and mature digital profile, one including privacy settings. To me, this is the most important aspect in keeping all of your post from spreading/ hurting you. Once an account is on private, only people who the user is friends with can see the posts/like them. Another way to keep your profile safe is to create a strong password. With a difficult password, hackers and other users can not get in to your account to mess your reputation or profile up. Social media reputations are so important especially now that technology is growing!
This week I learned a lot about augmented reality and staying safe! I can't wait to see what I write about next week! See you soon!
